“WHY WEIGHT FOR CHANGE” - YSC WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM

Sticking to an exercise and nutrition program takes more than just willpower. Through rigorous evaluations, monitoring, and strength in numbers, we will provide you will the expertise and peer support that will keep you focused and motivated and strong in the face of barriers. Our comprehensive weight loss package includes a full evaluation of health risks, body composition, metabolism, physical activity and nutrition. It also includes our SOAR 12-week weight loss course and a total of four one-on-one consulting sessions with an exercise physiologist and a nutritionist.

Who should do this?

  • Overweight individuals serious about losing excess body mass, generally people with a BMI > 35.
  • People who have struggled with their weight and/or have experience consistent fluctuations in weight.

When can I start?
Our program has a rolling admission. New individuals can enter at the beginning of every month.

How long is the program and what is my commitment level?
The YSC weight loss program is a 12 week-program. Individuals meet once a week with our team and others with similar goals. As this time frame is shorter than many programs of its kind, maximal changes will only be observed with a strong commitment to the program.

What will I do in this program?
WWFC includes:

  1. Full health risk assessment and vitals

    • What will I do? – We will take your resting heart rate, blood pressure, and a brief health history.
  2. Physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle assessments.

    • What will I do? – You will fill out a series of questionnaires about your eating habits and style, your activity levels, sleep, and behaviors related to well-being. We will use this to counsel you on ways to enhance these aspects of your lifestyle.
  3. Resting metabolism assessment and blood work (fasted)

    • What will I do? - After a brief rest period, we will connect you to a facial mask which will collect your inspired and expired air. This will take about 30 minutes. We will also collect a sample of blood pre- and post-program to examine your glucose, cholesterol, Vitamin C and D, and other important indicators of health.
    • How do I prepare for this? - Wear comfortable/loose clothing and arrive in a fasted state (about 12 hours with no food). Make sure to be normally hydrated. Do not consume any caffeine prior to testing.
  4. Cardiovascular fitness test

    • What will I do? - You will do aerobic exercise on a special stationary bicycle to increase your heart rate progressively and safely until a point when you are working “hard”. Most individuals will perspire. This is often completed just after the metabolic test, but not always.
    • How do I prepare for this? – Typically prepare the same as for the resting metabolic test. If your metabolic and fitness testing is on separate occasions, make sure that you are normally hydrated and abstain from food 2 hours before the test. Make sure to have appropriate footwear and exercise/loose fitting clothing.
  5. Four 30 min pre-and post-program one-on-one sessions (with an exercise physiologist/nutritionist)

    • What will I do? - You will have an initial intake meeting with our staff for final registration and advising to help customize your experience. We will assign provide you a pedometer at this time to help you keep track of your physical activity.
  6. SOAR weight loss course

    • What will I do? - You will join us for 10 weekly 50 minute-long conversations with two experts in nutrition and exercise in a group support setting. You will also receive peer and expert support for your weight loss goals. Activities will include: goal setting, monitoring of your progress, incentives for making good progress, and troubleshooting when you get behind. There will also be optional weekly weigh-ins.

What else do I get for this service?
Formal reports (baseline and changes over time), a program manual, incentives for achieving success, and all participants who complete the course will receive a “diploma” at the last meeting.
